Stone: ALEX’R
MACORQUODALE
AMERILLA
MILLER
Right Stone: In memory of Noah D. beloved son of Alex'r and Amerilla MacCorquodale died November 12, 1851
aged 19 years and 6 months.
Left Stone: In memory of our little one Jannet beloved daughter of D. and Mary A. MacCorquodale died
June 16, 1870 aged 4 year 1 month and 3 days.
Note:
Carved in stone does not always mean it is right. The use of Mac instead of Mc
for the name McCorquodale stems from the belief of one man, Alexander
McCorquodale, that he had the right spelling. He was the literate member of the
family, able to send a letter by his own hand regarding the near loss of his
land claim, and to negotiate on behalf of his brother as well.
There
are many versions of the name McCorquodale, but he was the only one that used
Mac. He may have picked that up in Kilmartin Parish, Argyllshire where that
spelling was common in a certain time frame. The surrounding parishes of
Argyllshire did not use Mac. He was born at Ormaig ,
Kilmartin, Argyllshire. The following is from the parish records:
